A story which is identically experienced by every other player of a game is far less powerful than one that is unique to the individual.

    I'm excited.

I was wondering if i needed to play the other bioshocks in order to understand this as i thought this was a standalone game.

Glad I'm not the only one...

As far as I'm aware Infinite is a stand alone a game; different city, people, era the works. That said, I do have my suspicions that it''ll loosely connect to Bioshock 1. When I say loosely, Infinite takes place in the early 1900's predating Bioshock 1 by roughly 50 years. Bioshock 2 happens a decade after 1.

Bioshock 1 does have the odd niggle but its definitely a must play of this generation regardless. Despite Ken Levine not being involved with Bioshock 2 its still a solid enough game it just doesn't pull off what it tries to do as effectively as the original. To be honest Bioshock 1 is one of those games that didn't really need a sequel, imo. I think it all came down to the original doing so well that the publishers decided to cash in. Whereas Levine wanted to follow with Infinite instead, hence, his lack of involvement.

There is a demo of Bioshock 1 on xbox live not sure if its on Psn though. Whilst it doesn't do the full game justice it should give you a rough idea. What I will say is to get the most out of the gameplay ensure you experiment with the different powers and don't play it like a straightforward shooter. As for the story it can be interpreted in a variety of different ways so I won't say anything else until you've played it.

This is a vid of the first ten minutes of Bioshock. If you fancy a look.

Still one of my favourite game introductions. The violin music still makes the hair on my neck stand up everytime I here it.

If they were to do a movie on Bioshock, I think infinite would work better as it has an actual MC with a name, voice, face and characteristics that an audience can latch onto where in 1 and 2, you are a nameless cipher. That works better in a game where your actions have an effect on the world than in a movie.

Not saying infinite story is better tho.

A film would be possible from Bioshock and Bioshock 2 but I'd have to explain parts of the story which I don't want to do.

The thing with Bioshock 1 is everything is aimed at the player as in how certain type of video games treat players. And, this is done in a variety of different ways from visual style, level design, dialogue and so on.

For example, Andrew Ryan is the in-game character who created and built Rapture. One of Ryans quotes 'I could explain the science and everything else that went into creating Rapture, but it would be like playing Mozart to a tree frog'.

Now think of Andrew Ryans character as a real world games director speaking to a player. As with some of the other characters, Dr Steinman represents a character designer, Sander Cohen a conceptual artist and so on. Speaking of Sander Cohen one of my favourite in-game characters ever.

That's about the best I can do without spoilers.

With Bioshock's story being developed from a book called Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand) its story can be interpreted in different ways. I've just highlighted a few themes which it translates from the book into points about game design.

It could be done with a film as there are quite a few films which do similiar. All it would require is aiming everything at a character instead of the player. The film character couldn't be a silent protagonist but the world, inhabitants and the message could remain the same as it does with already released films.

I think they had notes on what the player character's history was so maybe they can use those to flesh the character out.
